DILG Secretary Ronnie Puno disclosed last friday that with 1.1 million loose firearms around, problems may occur in the next year’s national election.
During his visit in Davao city, Secretary Ronnie Puno urged owners of loose firearms in the region should immediately avail of the amnesty program until October 3, 2009. He also noted that aside from the penalty that one will have for violating the deadline, Congress would be asked to pass a law declaring illegal gun possession a non-bailable offense.
During elections, gun control has been one of the major problems for peacekeepers in Mindanao. The gun amnesty is part of the National Firearms Control Program under Executive Order 817.
