The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) reported that there were 600 listed attacks worldwide against nurses, doctors, ambulances and hospitals for the past two years in conflicted areas.

In the ICRC report released yesterday, it says that hospitals in Sri Lanka and Somalia have been shelled, ambulances being shot in Lebanon and in Bahrain, a trial is ongoing for a medical personnel who treated protesters. Other nations included in the report with high violence against medics were Libya, Afghanistan and Colombia.

Bahrain arrests doctors who spoke to news agencies

“Clearly there is a trend in terms of no respect of healthcare… and more importantly for us, nobody seems to care about it,” says ICRC’s director-general Yves Daccord.

“A few years ago, when an ambulance was shelled, or a hospital was taken by armed people, or doctors were arrested, there was an outcry. But now nobody – people, governments, armed groups – seems to be interested anymore.”

The ICRC plans to launch a big campaign against the issue to raise concerns and safety for medical personnel.
