In the ICRC report released yesterday, it says that hospitals in Sri Lanka and Somalia have been shelled, ambulances being shot in Lebanon and in Bahrain, a trial is ongoing for a medical personnel who treated protesters. Other nations included in the report with high violence against medics were Libya, Afghanistan and Colombia.

“Clearly there is a trend in terms of no respect of healthcare… and more importantly for us, nobody seems to care about it,” says ICRC’s director-general Yves Daccord.

“A few years ago, when an ambulance was shelled, or a hospital was taken by armed people, or doctors were arrested, there was an outcry. But now nobody – people, governments, armed groups – seems to be interested anymore.”

The ICRC plans to launch a big campaign against the issue to raise concerns and safety for medical personnel.
