20 Student Activists Arrested

There seems to be no end on the controversial dinner of the government delegation in Le Cirque. Yesterday, militant groups denounced the Arroyo administration for their “excessive” spending during their visit to the United States. The student activists even provoked a brief but violent clash with the guards of the Palace.

Authorities arrested a total of 20 protesters out of the 200 student activities who stormed the streets and sneak past the police outpost at the Mediola Bridge and performed a lightning rally at the Gate 7 of Malacañang.

According to those who have witnessed the rally, some students emerged bloodied in the mouth after the contact with blocking forces from the Manila Police District (MPD) and Presidential Security Group (PSG).

Student activists who joined the said rally are members of Anakbayan, League of Filipino Students, Student Christian Movement of the Philipppines and the College Editors Guild of the Philippines.

The students were able to hold a sit-in rally in front of the Gate 7 but were blocked by less than 10 MPD and PSG members. In just a matter of minutes reinforcements increased the Palace guards to at least 30.
